Visa rule changes

What changed, newest first. A rule change means a government changed something; a data update means we confirmed or corrected a figure. Every item links back to the official source.

Oct 20, 2026

  • Re-checked every program last verified at launch (16 programs). No government changed a rule since our launch check. We added fees and details that the official pages state but we hadn't shown yet.
  • Malaysia, DE Rantau Nomad Pass: fees now shown (data update).
    • RM1,080 per applicant and RM540 per dependant (including 8% SST), non-refundable, paid to MDEC when you apply. Income bar unchanged: USD 24,000 a year (tech) or USD 60,000 (non-tech).
    • You can file the renewal up to 3 months before the pass expires; renewals take 6–8 weeks.

  • Italy, Digital Nomad Visa: fee and timing added (data update).
    • €116 consular fee at the Paris consulate (cash, exact amount). Consulates say decisions can take up to 120 days for digital nomads (30–90 days for remote employees). After arrival, apply for the residence permit at the Questura within 8 working days.
    • Income rule unchanged: at least €25,500 a year (3× the health-cost exemption level).

  • Thailand, LTR visa: THB 50,000 fee added (data update). The 10-year visa costs THB 50,000 per person when collected in Thailand (more at embassies abroad). Work-from-Thailand income bar unchanged at USD 80,000 a year. Source: ltr.boi.go.th.
  • Thailand, DTV: fees confirmed (data update). USD 400 at the Washington DC embassy and £300 at the London embassy. The THB 500,000 savings test and 180-day stays are unchanged. Sources: washingtondc.thaiembassy.org, london.thaiembassy.org.
  • Uruguay, Digital Nomad Permit: no set income amount (data update). You sign a sworn declaration that you have enough means for your stay. The 180-day permit can be renewed once; the extension needs a criminal record certificate and Uruguay's vaccination certificate. Source: uruguayxxi.gub.uy (2026 entry-requirements guide).
  • Montenegro, Digital Nomad Residence: process details added (data update). Apply in person before your 90-day stay ends; a decision is due within 40 days. Source: digitalnomads.gov.me.
  • Also added from official pages: Thailand Privilege tier prices (THB 650,000 to 5M), UAE (health insurance and a medical fitness test are compulsory), Taiwan (health insurance for the whole stay; page updated 7 Aug 2026), Mexico (Barcelona consulate page updated 17 Jun 2026, figures unchanged), Panama (health insurance valid in Panama required).
  • Re-checked, no change: Antigua and Barbuda (still discontinued), Mauritius (Premium Visa still free, 1 year), South Africa (ZAR 650,796 a year), Thailand Non-B and O-A.

  • Japan, Digital Nomad Visa: you can come back on the same status 6 months after leaving (data update).
    • The 6-month stay still can't be extended, but the Immigration Services Agency says you can stay on this status again once 6 months have passed since you left Japan. So in practice it's about 6 months in Japan out of every 12. No residence card is issued.

  • Romania, Digital Nomad Visa: long-stay (D) visa fee is now €300 (rule change, from 27 April 2026; was €120).
    • Applies to long-stay visa applications sent through the e-Viza portal from 27 Apr 2026. The IGI page also now shows €300.
    • Also confirmed: the long-stay visa is granted for 90 days after IGI approval, then you apply for a residence permit (first extension 6 months). Income rule unchanged (3× Romania's average gross monthly salary); no official RON figure is published, so it stays partly verified.

  • Colombia, Digital Nomad Visa: income bar is COP 5,252,715 a month in 2026 (rule-indexed change).
    • 3× the 2026 legal monthly minimum wage of COP 1,750,905 (Decreto 1469 de 2025). Decreto 159 de 2026 kept that figure on a transitional basis while a Council of State case is pending, so it could still move.
    • We now show a fixed figure (about USD 1,655/month) instead of only the formula.

  • Ecuador, Digital Nomad (remote-work residence): income bar is USD 1,446 a month in 2026 (rule-indexed change).
    • 3× the 2026 Unified Basic Salary of USD 482, for each of the 3 months before applying, or USD 17,352 a year (36 SBU). +USD 250/month per dependant. Ecuador is now the lowest verified income requirement we track.

  • El Salvador: no official digital nomad visa (data update).
    • DGME's official list of temporary residence categories (F1–F16) has no digital nomad or remote-work category. Third-party guides describing one could not be confirmed. Shown as "No nomad visa". Status: pending → partly verified.

  • Seychelles, Workcation Retreat Program: requirements confirmed (data update).
    • Workcation Visitor Permit for up to 1 year; proof of income or funds (no figure stated), medical and travel insurance, onward ticket, accommodation. Status: pending → partly verified.

  • Philippines, Digital Nomad Visa: still not open (data update). EO 86 (April 2025) authorizes it, but no implementing guidelines yet and the DFA eVisa portal lists no nomad category. Shown as "Not open yet". Peru is in the same situation (law exists, no Migraciones procedure), also shown as "Not open yet".
  • Barbados, Brazil: details added (data update). Barbados Welcome Stamp: valid one year, you can reapply; fees due within 28 days of approval. Brazil (Toronto consulate): CAD 150 fee, CAD 435 for US and CAD 277.50 for UK nationals.
  • Re-checked, no change: Estonia, Cape Verde, Albania, Serbia, Thailand ED.

  • Czechia, Digital Nomad Programme: income bar now CZK 885,870 a year (rule-indexed change, effective 1 May 2026).
    • The threshold is 1.5× the average gross annual salary announced by the Ministry of Labour. That average rose to CZK 590,580 for 1 May 2026 – 30 April 2027 (MPSV notice 44/2026 Sb.), so the bar is about CZK 73,823 a month.
    • Status: partly verified → verified.

  • Portugal, D8 Digital Nomad Visa: €3,680 a month in 2026 (rule-indexed change).
    • The bar is 4× the minimum monthly wage (RMMG), averaged over the last 3 months. The RMMG went from €870 to €920 on 1 Jan 2026 (Decreto-Lei 139/2025), so the bar rose from €3,480 to €3,680.

  • Costa Rica, Digital Nomad (Estancia): figures confirmed (data update).
    • USD 3,000/month, or USD 4,000 with dependants. USD 100 fee. 1 year, extendable once.
    • Status: partly verified → verified.

  • Malaysia, MM2H: tier figures confirmed (data update).
    • Fixed deposit of USD 150k (Silver), 500k (Gold) or 1M (Platinum).
    • Participating fee of RM1,000, RM3,000 or RM200,000.
    • Pass of 5, 15 or 20 years. A property purchase is required.
    • Status: partly verified → verified.

  • Bahamas, BEATS: fees and renewals confirmed (data update).
    • USD 25 application + USD 1,000 permit, plus USD 25 + USD 500 per dependant.
    • 12 months, with annual renewals up to 3 years. Medical insurance required.
    • The official FAQ gives no income figure.
    • Status: pending → partly verified.

  • Curaçao, @HOME: fees and length confirmed (data update).
    • ANG 535 (about USD 294). 6 months + one 6-month extension. Families allowed. Medical insurance required.
    • Still no official income figure, so it stays partly verified.

  • New on every program page: a "Renewing" section. It only uses what official sources say. Spain's is a good newsletter hook: apply in Spain for a residence permit from 60 days before the 1-year visa expires.

  • Spain, Digital Nomad Visa: €2,849 a month in 2026 (rule-indexed change).
    • The rule is 200% of the minimum wage (SMI). The 2026 SMI is €17,094/yr (BOE RD 126/2026), so the bar is €34,188/yr.
    • Many guides still quote €2,160 (2023 SMI). Some consulates use the 14-payment monthly SMI, which gives €2,442.
    • We also added: the €73.26 in-Spain permit fee, the in-Spain permit route from 60 days before visa expiry, freelancer rules (3+ month foreign contract, up to 20% Spanish clients), and mandatory Social Security registration.

  • South Korea, Workation Visa (F-1-D): now a permanent program (rule change, effective 30 June 2026).
    • Up to 3 years (1 year + yearly extensions). The pilot allowed 2.
    • The income test went from a flat 2× GNI per capita to 1×–2× depending on age and Seoul vs elsewhere. GNI per capita is KRW 52,416,000 in 2026.

  • Malta, Nomad Residence Permit: figures confirmed (data update).
    • €42,000 gross a year. It has been €32,400 for applications filed before 1 April 2024.
    • €300 application + €100 card per person. Health insurance of €100,000+ required.

  • Romania, Digital Nomad Visa: rule confirmed from Law 22/2022 (data update).
    • 3× the average gross monthly salary, for each of the 6 months before applying. No current RON amount is published in the law.

  • Peru, Digital Nomad Visa: not open yet (data update).
    • It was created by Legislative Decree 1582, but Migraciones hasn't published an application procedure.
