Key differences
- The income bars are close: Brazil asks for USD 1,500 a month from a foreign employer (or USD 18,000 in available funds); Colombia asks for COP 5,252,715 a month (3× the 2026 minimum wage), shown in bank statements for the last 3 months.
- Colombia gives longer: up to 2 years. Brazil’s first residence is for up to 1 year, renewable for the same period.
- Colombia’s visa needs a passport from a country exempt from short-stay visas, and is for remote work for foreign companies (employee or freelancer) or a digital-content/IT start-up. Brazil asks for proof of employment with your foreign employer and a declaration that you can work remotely.
- Both ask for health insurance covering the whole stay. Brazil’s Toronto consulate quotes CAD 150 (CAD 435 for US nationals) and typically 10 business days, and wants a criminal record certificate under 3 months old. Colombia confirms dependants can come; its fee isn’t on the page we check.
