Key differences
- The income bars are close: Portugal asks for €3,680 a month (4× the €920 minimum wage, averaged over your last 3 months); Greece asks for €3,500 a month after taxes. Greece adds 20% for a spouse or partner and 15% for each child.
- Both are two-step routes. Portugal’s D8 visa leads to a 2-year AIMA residence permit, renewable for successive 3-year periods. Greece’s D visa (up to 12 months) leads to a Digital Nomad Residence Permit of up to 2 years, renewable for 2 more years at a time.
- Both want your income from outside the country: Portugal from employers or clients outside Portugal (with proof of tax residence); Greece bars working for a Greek company, as an employee or freelancer.
- Greece confirms family can come, and its D-visa fee is €180 at the London consulate (it varies by mission). The Portugal sources we use don’t state family rules or a fee.
