Key differences
- Taiwan’s bar is lower: an annual salary of at least USD 40,000 (age 30+) or USD 20,000 (age 20–29) in one of the last two years, or a digital nomad visa from another country. Japan asks for JPY 10 million a year of your own income at the time you apply.
- Taiwan also checks savings: a 6-month average bank balance of at least USD 10,000.
- Japan gives 6 months with no extension and no residence card; you can come back on the same status once 6 months have passed since you left Japan. The Taiwanese page we check doesn’t state the stay length; from inside Taiwan, you apply at least 10 working days before your stay ends.
- Both are only for certain passports: Japan for nationals of eligible countries and regions on the Immigration Services Agency list, Taiwan for nationals of visa-exempt countries. Both require health insurance for the whole stay (JPY 10 million of cover in Japan; full hospitalisation cover in Taiwan). Japan offers a spouse/child visa; the Taiwanese page doesn’t confirm family rules.

Japan Digital Nomad Visa
No extension. You can stay on this status again once 6 months have passed since you left Japan (Immigration Services Agency). No residence card is issued. Annual income of JPY 10M+ is the applicant’s own income at the time of applying. Private medical insurance with JPY 10M+ cover for the whole stay required. Only nationals of eligible countries/regions (ISA list). Spouse/child visa available.

Taiwan Digital Nomad Visa
Only for nationals of visa-exempt countries. Also needs 6-month average bank balance ≥ USD 10,000 and health insurance with full hospitalization cover for the whole stay.
