Key differences
- Hungary’s bar is lower: €3,000 net a month, shown for the 6 months before entry and kept up throughout the stay. Croatia asks for €3,622.50 a month (2.5× the average net salary), but it is the only one of the two that accepts savings instead: €43,470 for a 12-month stay or €65,205 for 18 months.
- Croatia grants up to 18 months; you can only extend (by up to 6 months) if your first grant was shorter, and a new application is possible 6 months after your stay ends. Hungary’s White Card runs up to 1 year and can be extended once, for another year, from inside Hungary via Enter Hungary.
- Family is the big split: Hungary allows no family reunification for White Card holders (except a child born in Hungary). In Croatia, close family can join through family reunification once your stay is granted, and each adds 10% of the average net salary to the bar.
- Hungary charges €110 at a consulate abroad (residence permit and entry visa in one fee), HUF 39,000 in person in Hungary or HUF 26,000 via Enter Hungary. Croatia charges €55.74 + €93.00 at a consulate. Neither lets you work for a local employer, and Hungary also rules out holding a share in a Hungarian company; Croatia asks for a legalised clean criminal record.
