What exists today
Visa-free visits: 90 days in any 180
The Federal Foreign Office says people whose passport doesn't need a visa may, as a general rule, not stay in Germany more than 90 days in any 180-day period, and may not take up gainful employment while there. A few bilateral agreements allow longer stays; the German missions in those countries have the details.
Nationals of Australia, Canada, Iceland, Israel, Japan, New Zealand, South Korea, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and the United States can apply for a residence permit, including for stays over 3 months, after entering without a visa.

The freelance residence permit (§ 21(5))
German law lets the authorities grant a residence permit for a freelance (freiberufliche) activity without the business tests that apply to other self-employment. Any licence the profession requires must already be granted or promised, and the relevant chambers, trade authorities and professional bodies are consulted. Applicants over 45 should have adequate retirement provision (§ 21(3)).
This is a permit to freelance from Germany, not a visa for working for an employer abroad while you travel.

Self-employment and founders (§ 21(1))
For other self-employment, a permit can be granted if there is an economic interest or a regional need, the activity is expected to have a positive effect on the economy, and the financing is secured by your own capital or a loan commitment. It is limited to 3 years at first. After 3 years of successful self-employment, a settlement permit is possible if your income supports you and your dependants.

The Opportunity Card (Chancenkarte, § 20a)
The Opportunity Card is a residence permit to look for work in Germany. It is first issued for up to 1 year. You must be a skilled worker or score enough points, have your livelihood secured, hold a recognised qualification (a degree, or training of at least 2 years) and show basic German or B2 English.
While searching you may work up to 20 hours a week on average, plus trial jobs of up to 2 weeks each. It can be extended for up to 2 more years only with a qualified job offer in Germany approved by the Federal Employment Agency.

Not legal advice. None of these sources say whether remote work for a foreign employer is allowed on a visa-free stay; confirm with the German mission or the local foreigners authority (Ausländerbehörde) before you go.

Quick answers
Does Germany have a digital nomad visa?
No. As of Oct 31, 2026, Germany's Residence Act (Aufenthaltsgesetz) has no residence permit for people who work remotely for a foreign employer or foreign clients. The closest legal routes are the freelance residence permit (§ 21(5)), the self-employment permit (§ 21(1)) and the Opportunity Card (§ 20a), which is a job-search permit.
How long can I stay in Germany without a visa?
If your passport is visa-exempt, the Federal Foreign Office says you may, as a general rule, not stay more than 90 days in any 180-day period, and may not take up gainful employment during that stay (auswaertiges-amt.de, read Oct 31, 2026).
Can I work remotely in Germany as a tourist?
The official sources don't say. The Federal Foreign Office says visa-exempt visitors may not take up gainful employment while in Germany, but it doesn't address remote work for a foreign employer. Ask the German mission or the local foreigners authority (Ausländerbehörde) before you rely on it.
Is the German freelance visa a digital nomad visa?
Not quite. § 21(5) of the Residence Act lets the authorities grant a residence permit for a freelance (freiberufliche) activity. Any licence the profession needs must be granted or promised, and the relevant professional bodies are consulted. Applicants over 45 should have adequate retirement provision (§ 21(3)). It is a permit to freelance in Germany, not a visa for working for clients abroad while travelling.
Can Americans apply for a German residence permit after arriving?
Yes, per the Federal Foreign Office: nationals of Australia, Canada, Iceland, Israel, Japan, New Zealand, South Korea, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and the United States can apply for a residence permit, including for stays over 3 months, after entering Germany without a visa (auswaertiges-amt.de, read Oct 31, 2026).
What are the closest digital nomad visas to Germany?
In the Schengen Area: Czechia Digital Nomad Programme (CZK 885,870 gross per year); Hungary White Card (€3,000 net per month); Croatia Temporary Stay of Digital Nomads (€3,622.50 per month); Spain Digital Nomad Visa (€2,849 gross per month). Each is checked on its official government page.
