Digital nomad visas in the Schengen Area

11 remote-work programs issued by Schengen countries, sorted by the minimum income on their official government page. European programs outside Schengen (including Cyprus) are listed separately below.

How Schengen travel works. A long-stay (D) visa or residence permit from one Schengen country lets you travel or stay in the other Schengen countries for up to 90 days in any 180-day period (EU FAQ, Q15 ↗). Longer stays elsewhere fall under that country's own rules. Cyprus-issued visas and permits aren't valid for Schengen travel (Your Europe ↗).

These programs are in Europe but the issuing country isn't a full Schengen member, so the permit doesn't give you 90/180 travel in the Schengen Area.

Quick answers

Which countries in the Schengen Area have a digital nomad visa?

We track 11 remote-work programs in Schengen countries: Italy, Spain, Hungary, Czechia, Greece, Malta, Croatia, Portugal, Latvia, Estonia and Romania. The Schengen Area has 29 members (the EU's list: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czechia, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland).

Can I travel around Schengen on a digital nomad visa?

If your nomad visa is a national long-stay (D) visa or a residence permit issued by a Schengen country, yes, within limits. The EU's official FAQ says a long-stay visa or residence permit issued by a Schengen State lets you travel or stay in other Schengen States for up to a “short stay”: 90 days in any 180-day period (eeas.europa.eu). Staying longer in another member state falls under that country's own rules, so check with it first.

Does the Cyprus digital nomad visa let me travel in Schengen?

No. Cyprus is in the EU but not yet a full Schengen member. The EU's Your Europe portal says visas or residence permits issued by Cyprus are not valid for travel to countries in the Schengen area (europa.eu). The Cyprus program itself: €3,500 net per month; stay 1 year.

Which Schengen digital nomad visa has the lowest income requirement?

Among the Schengen programs we've verified with a fixed figure, the lowest are Italy Digital Nomad Visa (about $2,384/month; official rule: At least 3× the minimum level for health-cost exemption (3 × €8,500 per year, i.e. ≥ €25,500/yr)), Spain Digital Nomad Visa (about $3,196/month; official rule: €2,849 gross per month (€34,188/yr): 200% of Spain's 2026 minimum wage (SMI €17,094/yr). Some consulates calculate it on the 14-payment monthly SMI (€1,221), which gives €2,442/month, so plan for the higher figure), Hungary White Card (about $3,365/month; official rule: €3,000 net per month (for 6 months before entry)). USD amounts are approximate, at exchange rates of Oct 20, 2026.

Which Schengen digital nomad visas allow family?

Official sources confirm family members can be included for Spain Digital Nomad Visa, Czechia Digital Nomad Programme, Greece Digital Nomad Visa, Malta Nomad Residence Permit and Croatia Temporary Stay of Digital Nomads. Hungary White Card does not include family.

Are Montenegro, Albania and Serbia in Schengen?

No. They aren't EU members and aren't on the EU's list of 29 Schengen countries, so their nomad permits don't give Schengen travel rights. Their own entry rules apply.
