Canada digital nomad visa: there isn't one

Canada has no special visa for remote workers, and it doesn't need one: IRCC lets digital nomads work for foreign employers or foreign clients while staying as visitors. Since May 2026 you need to be able to prove that income comes from outside Canada.

Working remotely as a visitor: IRCC's digital nomad rules

IRCC's instructions to its officers say a digital nomad needs only temporary resident status as a visitor to work remotely from Canada. That lets you relocate to Canada for up to 6 months at a time while you work remotely for a foreign employer or, if you're self-employed, provide services to clients outside Canada.

Remote work for a foreign employer does not count as entering the Canadian labour market. If you want to work for a Canadian employer, you need a work permit first, unless you're exempt under section 186 of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Regulations.

New since May 26, 2026: proof your income is from outside Canada

IRCC updated the instructions on May 26, 2026. Digital nomads must now give enough documents to show that their income is earned entirely outside Canada, and that they'll work remotely for a foreign employer or, if self-employed, only for clients outside Canada. You may be asked for these when you apply for a visitor visa or visitor record, or at the border.

Documents IRCC lists as acceptable (the list isn't exhaustive):

  • A letter of employment or an employment contract from a foreign employer
  • Pay stubs issued by a foreign employer
  • Service or sales contracts and invoices
  • A foreign business registration
  • Foreign income tax documents
  • Bank statements

You also still have to meet the normal visitor requirements: show you won't enter the Canadian labour market, have enough money to support yourself, and will leave at the end of your authorized stay.

How long you can stay, and extending (visitor record)

Most visitors can stay up to 6 months. The border officer may allow less or more; if so, they put the leave-by date in your passport or give you a document. With no stamp, you can stay 6 months from the day you entered, or until your passport or biometrics expire, whichever comes first.

To stay longer, apply for a visitor record (it's not a visa). IRCC's digital nomad instructions say a nomad who wants to stay beyond the first authorized period must apply for one, and the Help Centre says to apply at least 30 days before your authorized stay ends.

eTA or visitor visa: what you need to get in

eTA: visa-exempt foreign nationals need an electronic travel authorization to fly to or transit through a Canadian airport (not when arriving by car, bus, train or boat). It costs CAD $7, is valid for up to 5 years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first, and covers as many short stays as you want (normally up to 6 months at a time). Most applications are approved within minutes. US citizens and US lawful permanent residents are exempt.

Visitor visa: most other travellers need a visitor visa (temporary resident visa). An officer decides whether it's single or multiple entry; it can be valid for up to 10 years, or until your passport or biometrics expire. Since May 26, 2026, some citizens of Indonesia and Malaysia can apply for an eTA instead when flying.

Family members

Family members of digital nomads must apply for their own temporary resident status (for example as a visitor, worker or student). They aren't automatically allowed to work or study in Canada and need a work or study permit to do so.

International Experience Canada: a work permit if you're 18 to 35

If you're 18 to 35 (18 to 30 in some countries) and from a partner country or territory, you can come to work and travel through International Experience Canada (IEC). Depending on your country, the categories are Working Holiday, Young Professionals and International Co-op (Internship). Partner countries include Australia, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, New Zealand, South Korea, Spain and the UK, among others.

IRCC says the pools for the 2026 season are closed. If you didn't get an invitation, you can create a new profile when the pools reopen for the 2027 season.

Quick answers

Does Canada have a digital nomad visa?

No. As of Nov 1, 2026, Canada has no separate visa or permit for digital nomads. Instead, IRCC's instructions say digital nomads need only visitor status to work remotely from Canada for a foreign employer, or for clients outside Canada if self-employed, for up to 6 months at a time (canada.ca, read Nov 1, 2026).

Can I work remotely in Canada as a visitor?

Yes, if the work is for a foreign employer or, if you're self-employed, only for clients outside Canada. IRCC says this remote work does not count as entering the Canadian labour market. Working for a Canadian employer needs a work permit unless you're exempt under section 186 of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Regulations (canada.ca, read Nov 1, 2026).

What proof do digital nomads need for Canada?

Since IRCC's May 26, 2026 update, digital nomads must provide enough documents to show their income is earned entirely outside Canada. Examples IRCC lists (not exhaustive): a letter of employment or an employment contract from a foreign employer; pay stubs issued by a foreign employer; service or sales contracts and invoices; a foreign business registration; foreign income tax documents; bank statements. You must also meet the usual visitor tests: not entering the labour market, enough money to support yourself, and leaving at the end of your stay (canada.ca, read Nov 1, 2026).

How long can a digital nomad stay in Canada?

Most visitors can stay up to 6 months. The border officer may allow less or more and will then put the leave-by date in your passport. To stay longer, apply for a visitor record; the IRCC Help Centre says to apply at least 30 days before your authorized stay ends (ircc.canada.ca, read Nov 1, 2026).

How much is the Canada eTA and how long does it last?

An eTA costs CAD $7. It is valid for up to 5 years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first, and lets you visit as often as you want for short stays (normally up to 6 months at a time). It's needed by visa-exempt foreign nationals flying to Canada; US citizens are exempt (canada.ca, read Nov 1, 2026).

Can my family come with me?

IRCC says family members of digital nomads must apply for their own temporary resident status (for example, as a visitor, worker or student). They aren't automatically allowed to work or study in Canada and need a work or study permit to do so (canada.ca, read Nov 1, 2026).

Is there a longer-stay option with work rights?

If you're 18 to 35 (18 to 30 in some countries) and from a partner country, you can work and travel in Canada through International Experience Canada. IRCC says the pools for the 2026 season are closed and you can create a new profile when pools reopen for the 2027 season (canada.ca, read Nov 1, 2026).
