Key differences
- Italy’s bar is lower on paper: at least €25,500 a year (3× the health-cost exemption level, about €2,125 a month). Greece asks for €3,500 a month after taxes, plus 20% for a spouse or partner and 15% for each child. Remote employees in Italy must also earn at least the ISTAT average gross salary.
- Greece gives a national (D) visa for up to 12 months, then a Digital Nomad Residence Permit valid for up to 2 years that can be renewed for 2 more years at a time. In Italy you apply for the residence permit at the Questura within 8 working days of arrival; the consular pages we check don’t state the stay length.
- Who can apply differs: Greece only needs income from employers or clients outside Greece (you can’t work for a Greek company). Italy is for highly qualified workers (a degree or equivalent experience) with 6+ months of prior remote work, and asks for health insurance covering Italy plus a registered lease or deed.
- Fees vary by consulate: €180 for the Greek national (D) visa in London, €116 at the Italian consulate in Paris (cash, exact amount). Italian consulates say a decision can take up to 120 days for digital nomads. Greece lets family come; the Italian pages don’t confirm family rules.
