How to apply for the UAE (Dubai) virtual work visa

A one-year, self-sponsored residence for people who work remotely for an employer outside the UAE. No local sponsor needed. Here's each step, from GDRFA Dubai, ICP and the UAE government portal.

Salary
USD 3,500 per month
Fee (GDRFA)
AED 200 + AED 20 surcharges
Valid
1 year, renewable
Timing
48 hours (GDRFA) · 2 days (ICP)

Step by step

Step 1: check you qualify

You need to work remotely for an organisation outside the UAE and prove it. You also need documents showing you earn at least USD 3,500 a month, or the equivalent in another currency. There's no guarantor or host inside the country: the permit is self-sponsored.

Step 2: choose ICP or GDRFA Dubai, and set up UAE Pass

The UAE government portal says you can apply to ICP or GDRFA Dubai. ICP lists the "Issuance of Visa Virtual Work Residence" in its visitors category: it runs on the ICP smart app and website, needs a UAE Pass login, and doesn't require you to be inside the country. GDRFA Dubai's residence-permit service runs on its website and app (UAE Pass or username), at Customer Happiness Centres and at Amer service centres.

Step 3: apply and pay the fees

GDRFA Dubai: AED 200 permit + AED 20 Knowledge/Innovation Dirhams; AED 500 if applying inside UAE; AED 20 delivery. The issuance fee rises by AED 100 for each year when the residency is longer than two years.

ICP's virtual work visa service: AED 100 application, AED 100 issuance and AED 100 smart services.

GDRFA notes that the mandatory and optional documents can change depending on the details in your application.
