Step by step

Step 1: check you qualify

You need to be a third-country national (not EU, EEA or Swiss). You work remotely — as an employee, freelancer or through your own company — for employers or clients outside Greece, using information and communication technology. You must not work for a Greek company.

Income: stable resources of at least €3,500 a month after taxes for the main applicant. Add 20% for a spouse or cohabitant and 15% for each child (so €4,200 with a partner, €4,725 with a partner and one child).

Step 2: gather the documents
  • A fully completed and signed long-stay (national) visa application form, with a recent colour photo
  • A passport or other travel document recognised by Greece (valid for at least 3 months after your planned last exit from the Schengen area, at least 2 blank pages, issued within the last 10 years)
  • A solemn declaration that you intend to live in Greece to work remotely and will not work for, or provide services to, an employer established in Greece
  • Proof of remote work: an employment or services contract with an employer outside Greece (indefinite, or fixed-term covering the visa period), or contracts with more than one foreign employer/client if you freelance, or (if you run your own foreign company) details of your status, the company name, seat, field of activity and corporate purpose
  • Proof of sufficient resources: stable net income of at least €3,500 a month (see the income test), shown by the contract/employment certificate and/or a bank statement
  • A criminal-record certificate from the authorities of your country of residence
  • A medical certificate from a recognised state or private body stating you do not have a disease that poses a public-health risk under WHO/EU rules
  • Travel insurance valid at least for the national visa period, covering repatriation for medical reasons, emergency medical care and/or emergency hospital care

Proof of funds can come from the employment or services contract and/or a bank statement. Work From Greece publishes a linked document checklist; your consulate may ask for extra items.

Step 3: travel insurance (required for the D visa)

The EU Immigration Portal lists travel insurance among the common documents for a Greek national visa. It must be valid at least for the visa period and cover costs that may arise from repatriation for medical reasons, emergency medical care and/or emergency hospital care. We don't say whether any particular plan meets that rule.

Step 4: apply at a Greek embassy or consulate

Apply in your country of main residence. Work From Greece says requests can go by email or registered letter, and the consular authority should confirm receipt and status within 10 days. MFA's UK page points UK applicants to the visa appointment centre at uk-gr.gvcworld.eu.

Fee: €180 national long-stay (D) visa fee at the Greek consulate in London (£153.00 at the November 2026 rate); varies by mission. The EU portal also lists €75 / €90 / €180 depending on category — always confirm with the mission that will handle your file.

You cannot apply for the digital nomad visa from inside Greece. Since 5 February 2026 (N5275/2026), you also cannot switch from a tourist stay or visa waiver straight onto the Digital Nomad Residence Permit; enter on the digital nomad visa first.

Step 5: after arrival — residence permit if you stay longer

The national visa itself is for up to 12 months and is not renewed. Before it expires, apply through the Ministry of Migration and Asylum for a Digital Nomad Residence Permit (Work From Greece: up to 2 years, renewable every 2 years). Use the ministry's electronic applications portal ↗.

Bring the same supporting evidence as for the visa, plus proof of accommodation in Greece (lease or property purchase). Work From Greece quotes a €1,000 application fee plus €150 per additional family member — confirm the current fee when you file. The EU portal notes an €16 e-fee for printing the stand-alone residence document.

What you'll need

The income test, with family

€3,500 per month after taxes (+20% for a spouse or partner, +15% for each child).

If the income comes from employment or independent services, the €3,500 figure is net of taxes due in the country where the work is performed. You can show it with the contract/employment certificate and/or a bank statement.

Family members

Spouse/partner and children can join if you meet the higher income bar. Each family member needs a national-visa file: passport, criminal record, medical certificate, travel insurance and a family-status certificate. The EU portal lists a €90 consular fee for digital-nomad family members.

Quick answers

How do I apply for the Greece digital nomad visa?

Apply for a national long-stay (type D) visa at the Greek embassy or consulate in your country of main residence. Work From Greece says you can submit by email or registered letter, and the consular authority is obliged to respond within 10 days. You cannot start the digital nomad route from inside Greece on a tourist stay: as of 5 February 2026 you need the digital nomad visa first, then you may apply in Greece for the residence permit (workfromgreece.gr and mfa.gr and home-affairs.ec.europa.eu, read Nov 5, 2026).

How much income do I need?

At least €3,500 a month after taxes for the main applicant, from employers or clients outside Greece. Add 20% for a spouse or cohabitant (€700 → €4,200) and 15% for each child (€525 each). Work From Greece and the EU Immigration Portal both state the €3,500 figure; the family uplifts are on Work From Greece (workfromgreece.gr and workfromgreece.gr and home-affairs.ec.europa.eu and mfa.gr, read Nov 5, 2026).

How much does the visa cost?

It varies by mission. The Greek Consulate in London's November 2026 fee table lists the national long-stay (type D) visa at €180 (£153.00 at that month's rate). The EU Immigration Portal notes national-visa fees of €75, €90 or €180 depending on the category; family members of a digital nomad are listed at €90 there. Ask your consulate for the amount that applies to you (mfa.gr and home-affairs.ec.europa.eu, read Nov 5, 2026).

How long can I stay, and can I renew?

The national digital nomad visa is for up to 12 months and is not itself extended. Before it expires you can apply in Greece, through the Ministry of Migration and Asylum, for a Digital Nomad Residence Permit valid for up to 2 years and renewable for further 2-year periods while you still meet the conditions (workfromgreece.gr and workfromgreece.gr and home-affairs.ec.europa.eu, read Nov 5, 2026).

Can I work for Greek companies?

No. You must work remotely for employers or clients outside Greece, and you may not work for a Greek company as an employee or freelancer during the visa or residence-permit period (workfromgreece.gr and mfa.gr and home-affairs.ec.europa.eu, read Nov 5, 2026).

Can my family come with me?

Yes. Immediate family can be included if you meet the higher income test (+20% spouse/partner, +15% per child). Family members need their own national-visa file (passport, criminal record, medical certificate, travel insurance and a family-status certificate); the EU portal lists a €90 consular fee for digital-nomad family members (workfromgreece.gr and home-affairs.ec.europa.eu, read Nov 5, 2026).

Do I need health or travel insurance?

Yes for the national visa. The EU Immigration Portal's common documents for a Greek national visa include travel insurance covering repatriation for medical reasons, emergency medical care and/or emergency hospital care, valid at least for the visa period. We don't recommend or compare policies (home-affairs.ec.europa.eu, read Nov 5, 2026).

What happens after I arrive?

Enter Greece on the digital nomad visa. If you want to stay beyond the visa, apply for the Digital Nomad Residence Permit through the Ministry of Migration and Asylum electronic portal before the visa expires, with the same supporting evidence plus proof of accommodation in Greece (lease or property). Work From Greece quotes a €1,000 residence-permit application fee plus €150 per additional family member; confirm the current fee on the ministry portal (workfromgreece.gr and portal.immigration.gov.gr and home-affairs.ec.europa.eu, read Nov 5, 2026).
